QVAR MDI - Canada Product Information

QVAR Inhalation Aerosol is a type of medication called a corticosteroid. It helps to reduce inflammation in your airways, making it easier to breathe. It is used to manage asthma and prevent asthma attacks.

How Does QVAR Work?

QVAR contains the active ingredient beclomethasone dipropionate, which helps reduce swelling and irritation in the airways. This makes breathing easier and helps prevent asthma symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath.

Who Can Use QVAR?

QVAR is suitable for adults and children aged 5 years and older who have asthma. It is not for use during an acute asthma attack.

How to Use QVAR

  1. Prepare the Inhaler:
    • Remove the cap and check the mouthpiece to ensure it is clean.
    • Shake the inhaler well before each use.
    • If you are using it for the first time or have not used it for over 14 days, release 4 test sprays into the air.
  2. Inhaling the Medication:
    • Breathe out fully through your mouth.
    • Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips around it.
    • As you start to breathe in slowly and deeply, press down on the canister to release the medication.
    • Continue to breathe in slowly and deeply.
    • Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly.
  3. After Use:
    • Replace the cap on the mouthpiece.
    • Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out to help prevent infections like thrush.

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the correct dose for you. The usual starting dose is:

  • For children aged 5-11 years: 50 to 100 micrograms twice daily.
  • For adults and children aged 12 years and older: 100 to 400 micrograms twice daily.

What to Expect

  • It may take a few weeks for you to feel the full benefit of QVAR.
  • Use QVAR regularly, even if you feel well, to keep your asthma under control.

  • Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, QVAR can cause side effects. Common ones include:

    • Sore throat or tongue

    • Headache

Less common but serious side effects include:

    • Thrush (a fungal infection in the mouth)
