What is JANUMET®?

JANUMET® is a prescription medicine that contains two active ingredients: sitagliptin and metformin hydrochloride. It helps control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

How does JANUMET® work?

JANUMET® combines two medications:

Sitagliptin: Helps your body increase the levels of insulin after eating.

Metformin: Lowers the amount of sugar your liver makes and helps your body use insulin more effectively.

Who should use JANUMET®?

JANUMET® is for adults with type 2 diabetes when diet and exercise alone are not enough to control blood sugar. It can be used by those:

• Who are already taking metformin and need better blood sugar control.
• Who are already taking both sitagliptin and metformin.

Who should not use JANUMET®?

Do not use JANUMET® if you:

• Have type 1 diabetes.
• Have severe kidney problems.
• Have a condition called metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis.
• Drink a lot of alcohol.
• Have severe liver problems.
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Are allergic to sitagliptin, metformin, or any ingredients in JANUMET®.

How should I take JANUMET®?

Take JANUMET® exactly as your doctor tells you.

Usually taken twice a day with meals to lower the chance of stomach upset.

Swallow the tablet whole. Do not break, crush, or chew it.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but do not take two doses at the same time.

Possible side effects of JANUMET®

Like all medicines, JANUMET® can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

Stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

Upper respiratory infection

Headache

Serious side effects:

Lactic Acidosis: A rare but serious condition where lactic acid builds up in the blood. Symptoms include feeling very weak or tired, unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, dizziness or light-headedness, and slow or irregular heartbeat.

Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas. Symptoms include severe stomach pain that doesn’t go away, nausea, and vomiting.

Kidney Problems: Monitor kidney function regularly while taking JANUMET®.

Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia): More likely if taken with other diabetes medicines that cause low blood sugar.

How should I store JANUMET®?

Store JANUMET® at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

Keep out of reach of children.

What should I tell my doctor before taking JANUMET®?

Inform your doctor if you:

Have kidney or liver problems.

Have heart problems.

Drink alcohol frequently.

Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Are taking other prescription or over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, or herbal supplements.
