SEREVENT DISKUS - Canada Product Information
Serevent Diskus is a dry powder inhaler used to help manage breathing problems. It contains the active ingredient salmeterol, which is a bronchodilator. This means it helps to open up your airways, making it easier to breathe.
What is it used for?
Asthma:
- Serevent Diskus is used alongside inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) for long-term control of asthma in adults and children 4 years and older.
- It's important to keep using your ICS even when you start using Serevent Diskus.
- It should not be used for sudden asthma attacks. Always have a fast-acting inhaler (like salbutamol) for quick relief.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD):
- Serevent Diskus helps manage symptoms like bronchospasm and shortness of breath associated with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
- It should not be used as a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems.
How to Use Serevent Diskus
- Open: Hold the Diskus in one hand and place the thumb of the other hand on the thumb grip. Push your thumb away from you as far as it will go until the mouthpiece appears and snaps into position.
- Prepare: Slide the lever away from you until it clicks. This loads the dose.
- Inhale: Breathe out fully (away from the mouthpiece). Put the mouthpiece to your lips and breathe in steadily and deeply through the Diskus, not through your nose.
- Hold and Close: Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly. Slide the thumb grip back towards you to close the Diskus.
Dosage
For Asthma:
- Adults and children 4 years and older: One blister (50 mcg) twice daily.
For COPD:
- One blister (50 mcg) twice daily.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not double the dose.
