TIMOPTIC-XE® - Canada Product Information
What is Timoptic-XE®?
Timoptic-XE® is an eye drop solution used to reduce high pressure in the eyes, a condition that can lead to glaucoma or other eye problems. It contains the active ingredient timolol, which is a type of medication called a beta-blocker.
What is it Used For?
Timoptic-XE® is used to treat conditions where the pressure inside your eye is too high, such as:
- Chronic open-angle glaucoma
- Ocular hypertension
- Glaucoma in people who have had cataract surgery (aphakic patients)
How Does it Work?
Timolol, the active ingredient, helps to lower the pressure in your eye by reducing the amount of fluid inside it. This helps prevent damage to your optic nerve and loss of vision.
When Should You Not Use Timoptic-XE®?
Do not use Timoptic-XE® if you:
- Have severe breathing problems like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Have heart conditions such as slow heart rate, heart block, or heart failure
- Are allergic to timolol or any other ingredients in the product
Important Precautions
Before using Timoptic-XE®, tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:
- Breathing problems (like asthma or COPD)
- Heart problems
- Blood circulation problems (like Raynaud's syndrome)
- Diabetes, as timolol can mask signs of low blood sugar
- Overactive thyroid
- Any allergies
How to Use Timoptic-XE®
- Before the first use, check the safety strip on the bottle is unbroken.
- Shake the bottle once before each use.
- Open the bottle by unscrewing the cap.
- Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to form a pocket.
- Press lightly on the "finger push area" to release a drop into your eye.
- Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye or any surface to avoid contamination.
- Press a finger to the corner of your eye by the nose for 2 minutes to keep the drop in your eye.
- If you use more than one type of eye drop, wait at least 10 minutes between applications.
What if You Miss a Dose?
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
