What is Triumeq?
Triumeq is a medication used to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) infection in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older, who weigh at least 40 kg (about 88 pounds). It contains three active ingredients: dolutegravir, abacavir, and lamivudine, which work together to help control HIV infection.
How does Triumeq work?
Triumeq helps to control HIV infection by stopping the virus from multiplying in your body. This helps to lower the amount of HIV in your blood (viral load) and increase the number of immune cells (CD4 cells) in your blood. However, Triumeq is not a cure for HIV and does not prevent you from passing HIV to others. You should continue to take precautions to avoid transmitting HIV.
How do I take Triumeq?
- Dosage: The recommended dose for adults and adolescents (aged 12 years and older and weighing at least 40 kg) is one tablet once daily.
- With or without food: Triumeq can be taken with or without food.
- Missed dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses at the same time.
Important Information Before Taking Triumeq
- Allergies: Do not take Triumeq if you are allergic to dolutegravir, abacavir, lamivudine, or any other ingredients in this medication.
- HLA-B*5701 test: Before starting Triumeq, your doctor will perform a test to check if you have a gene called HLA-B*5701. If you have this gene, you are at a higher risk of having a serious allergic reaction to Triumeq and should not take it.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Triumeq may harm your unborn baby, especially if taken during the first trimester. Do not breastfeed while taking Triumeq, as it can pass into your breast milk and harm your baby.
Possible Side Effects
Like all medications, Triumeq can cause side effects. Not everyone will experience these, but some of the most common and serious side effects include:
- Allergic reactions: Stop taking Triumeq and get medical help right away if you experience symptoms like fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, or difficulty breathing.
- Lactic acidosis: A rare but serious condition that can cause symptoms like weakness, tiredness, unexplained weight loss, stomach pain, and trouble breathing.
- Liver problems: Triumeq can cause liver problems, especially if you already have hepatitis B or C. Symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, and pale stools.
- Other side effects: Some people may experience headaches, nausea, diarrhea, trouble sleeping, or dizziness.
Interactions with Other Medications
Triumeq can interact with other medications. Tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some medicines may affect how well Triumeq works, or Triumeq may affect how well they work.
