What is Cholestyramine?

Cholestyramine is a prescription medication used to:

• Lower cholesterol levels, especially "bad" LDL cholesterol, in your blood.
• Help relieve diarrhea caused by bile acids (commonly seen in certain digestive conditions).
• Reduce itching caused by bile buildup due to partial bile duct blockage.

This medication works by binding to bile acids in your intestines, which are then removed from your body through stool. This process helps reduce cholesterol and control symptoms related to bile acid imbalances.

How to Use Cholestyramine

• Mix it First: Never take the powder dry—it can cause choking. Always mix it with water or other liquids.
• How to Prepare:
  1. Add the contents of one pouch to 4-6 ounces (120-180 mL) of water, milk, or fruit juice.
  2. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then stir well until fully mixed.
  3. You can also mix the powder into soft foods like applesauce or yogurt.

Who Should NOT Use This Medicine?

• Those with complete blockage of bile flow into the intestines.
• If you're allergic to any ingredients in this product (e.g., aspartame or flavorings).

Precautions

• Drug Interactions: Cholestyramine may affect how other medications work. Take other medications at least 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after this product.
• Pregnancy and Nursing: Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
• Vitamin Deficiencies: Long-term use may reduce absorption of certain vitamins (A, D, E, K, and folic acid). Your doctor might recommend supplements.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effect is constipation. Other possible side effects include:

• Bloating, gas, or stomach discomfort.
• Nausea or diarrhea.
• Skin irritation or rash.
• Vitamin deficiencies with long-term use (may lead to night blindness or easy bruising).

• Keep out of reach of children.

When to Seek Medical Attention

• Missed Dose: Do not double the dose. Take your next dose as scheduled.
