What is Imitrex Injection?

Imitrex Injection contains the active ingredient sumatriptan, which is used to treat migraine attacks. It is available as a pre-filled syringe for subcutaneous (under the skin) injection.


What is Imitrex Injection used for?

Imitrex Injection is used to treat acute migraine attacks with or without aura. It is not intended for the prevention of migraines or for other types of headaches.


How does Imitrex Injection work?

Imitrex works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing substances in the body that can trigger migraine symptoms like headache, nausea, sensitivity to light, and sound.


Who should not use Imitrex Injection?

Do not use Imitrex Injection if you:

  • Are allergic to sumatriptan or any other ingredients in the medication.
  • Have a history of heart problems, including heart attack or angina.
  • Have had a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
  • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • Are taking or have recently taken (within 2 weeks) monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

How to use Imitrex Injection

  • Injection Site: Inject the medication subcutaneously into the outer thigh or upper arm.
  • Dosage: The usual dose is a single 6 mg injection. If your migraine returns or you have a partial response, you may take a second injection after 1 hour. Do not take more than 12 mg (two 6 mg injections) in 24 hours.
  • Instructions: Follow the instructions provided with the autoinjector for proper use. Do not use if the solution appears cloudy or has particles.

  • Possible Side Effects


    Common side effects may include:

    • Pain or irritation at the injection site
    • Dizziness or drowsiness
    • Flushing (redness or warmth in your face)
    • Tingling or numbness in your fingers or toes

    Serious side effects (seek medical help immediately):

    • Chest pain or tightness
    • Shortness of breath
    • Severe stomach pain and bloody diarrhea
    • Vision changes or loss

    Warnings and Precautions

  • Heart Health: Ensure you have been evaluated by a healthcare provider if you have risk factors for heart disease.
  • Medication Overuse: Overusing migraine medication can lead to more frequent headaches (medication overuse headache).
  • Serotonin Syndrome: Rare but serious condition caused by high levels of serotonin. Symptoms include agitation, hallucinations, coma, fast heartbeat, and increased body temperature.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

    If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this medication.

    Store between 59°F and 86°F.

    A refill pack contains 2 pre-filled syringes in a carton.
