WHAT IS ISENTRESS®?
ISENTRESS® (raltegravir) is a medication used to treat HIV-1 infection. It works by blocking the HIV virus from multiplying in your body, helping to manage your infection.
WHO CAN USE ISENTRESS®?
Adults
ISENTRESS® and ISENTRESS HD® can be used by adults with HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral medications.
Children
ISENTRESS® can be used in children aged 2 years and older who weigh at least 7 kg (about 15 lbs). ISENTRESS HD® can be used in children weighing at least 40 kg (about 88 lbs).
Older Adults
If you are 65 years or older, your doctor will decide if ISENTRESS® is right for you based on your overall health.
MISSED DOSE
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medications, ISENTRESS® can cause side effects. Not everyone experiences them, but some of the most common ones include:
SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS
Some serious side effects can occur. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience:- Severe rash or skin reactions
- Allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Liver problems, shown by symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or stomach pain
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking ISENTRESS®. It is not known if ISENTRESS® passes into breast milk. HIV-infected mothers should not breastfeed to avoid transmitting the virus to their baby.
Children
The safety and effectiveness of ISENTRESS® have been studied in children aged 2 years and older. For children under 2 years, ISENTRESS® is not recommended.
Elderly Patients
If you are 65 or older, your doctor may need to monitor your health more closely.
