Crinone (Progesterone Vaginal Gel 8%) – Product Information

What is Crinone used for?

Crinone is a vaginal gel that contains the hormone progesterone. It is used to support women undergoing fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF). Specifically, it helps prepare and support the uterus during the early stages of pregnancy.

How does Crinone work?

Crinone is applied inside the vagina. It coats the vaginal walls and slowly releases progesterone over time. This helps create a supportive environment for a fertilized egg to implant and grow.

How to Use Crinone

  • Use one applicator daily, starting the day of your embryo transfer, or as instructed by your provider.

  • Your doctor may advise you to increase to two applications per day.

  • If pregnancy is confirmed, you may need to continue using Crinone for up to 10 to 12 weeks, or as directed.

  • Each applicator is single-use and should be thrown away after use.

Instructions for Use:

  1. Do not remove the cap until ready.

  2. Hold the thick end and shake it down like a thermometer.

  3. Twist off the cap.

  4. While sitting or lying down with knees bent, insert the thin end of the applicator into the vagina as far as is comfortable.

  5. Press the thick end to release the gel, then discard the applicator.

Important Reminders

  • Do not use other vaginal medications within 6 hours of Crinone.

  • Store at room temperature: 59–77°F.

  • Do not use after the expiry date.

  • Some leftover gel may remain in the applicator, this is normal.

  • You may notice some white or off-white discharge, this is common and harmless.

Possible Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and temporary. Common ones include:

  • Vaginal irritation or discharge

  • Breast tenderness

  • Headache or drowsiness

  • Nausea, bloating, or abdominal discomfort

  • Mood changes, such as nervousness or mild depression

  • Skin rash or itching

Rare but serious:

Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms of a blood clot (leg pain/swelling, chest pain, sudden shortness of breath), allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing), or jaundice (yellowing skin/eyes).

Do Not Use Crinone If You:

  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding

  • Have liver disease

  • Are pregnant and the baby has stopped developing (missed miscarriage)

  • Have or have had certain cancers (e.g., breast or genital cancers)

  • Have a history of blood clots, stroke, or clotting disorders

  • Are allergic to progesterone or any ingredient in Crinone

  • Are breastfeeding

Missed a Dose?

If you forget a dose, skip it and continue with your regular schedule (and discuss with your healthcare provider). Do not double up the next day.
