Alrex® Eye Drops - Canada Product Information



Alrex® is an eye drop medication used for the short-term relief of signs and symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, such as itching and redness in the eyes due to pollen allergies. The active ingredient is loteprednol etabonate, a type of corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the eyes.


When should you not use Alrex®?

Do not use Alrex® if:

  • You are allergic to loteprednol or any other ingredient in Alrex®.
  • You have an eye infection caused by viruses (like herpes simplex), bacteria, or fungi.
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • You are under 18 years old.
  • You have glaucoma or have been told you have increased pressure in the eyes.

  • Before you use Alrex®, talk to your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • You have any eye infections or suspect you might have one.
  • You have a history of glaucoma or increased eye pressure.

  • How to use Alrex®

    • Shake the bottle well before use.
    • Apply one drop into the affected eye(s) four times a day.
    • Use for a short period, usually not more than two weeks unless directed by your doctor.
    • Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination.
    • If you wear soft contact lenses, wait at least 10-15 minutes after using Alrex® before putting your lenses in.

    Missed Dose

    If you miss a dose, wait until the next scheduled dose. Do not double up.


    Possible Side Effects


    Common side effects may include:

  • Increased eye pressure
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye floaters
  • Burning sensation when applying drops
  • Eye swelling or discharge
  • Dry or sticky eyes
  • Tearing
  • Sensation of a foreign object in the eye
  • Eye itching or redness
  • Sensitivity to light

  • If you experience any severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, contact your doctor immediately.
