Onglyza® is a medication used to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works by enhancing the body's natural ability to regulate blood sugar.

Who Can Use Onglyza®?

Onglyza® is prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes. It can be used in combination with other diabetes medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin to help manage blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are not enough.

Who Should Not Use Onglyza®?

Do not use Onglyza® if you:

• Have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
• Are allergic to saxagliptin or any of its ingredients.
• Have had severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis or angioedema.

How to Take Onglyza®?

The usual dose is 2.5 mg or 5 mg once daily.

Onglyza® can be taken with or without food.

Swallow the tablet whole. Do not split or cut it.

What to Do if You Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include:

• Upper respiratory tract infection
• Urinary tract infection
• Headache

Serious side effects may include:

• Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat)
• Heart failure (shortness of breath, swelling of the legs, or sudden weight gain)
• Severe joint pain

Warnings and Precautions

Heart Failure: Onglyza® may increase the risk of heart failure. Contact your doctor if you experience symptoms such as shortness of breath or swelling of your ankles or feet.

Pancreatitis: Stop taking Onglyza® and contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe stomach pain that does not go away.

Hypoglycemia: When used with other diabetes medications, Onglyza® may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Know the signs of low blood sugar (dizziness, sweating, confusion) and how to treat it.

Interactions with Other Medicines

Some medicines may affect how Onglyza® works, and Onglyza® may affect other medicines you are taking. Inform your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Special Populations

Pregnant and Nursing Women: Onglyza® is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Children: Onglyza® is not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age.

Elderly: No dose adjustment is necessary based on age alone, but kidney function should be monitored.
