AZOPT (Brinzolamide) - Canada Product Information
AZOPT is an eye drop medication used to treat high pressure in the eyes (ocular hypertension) or open-angle glaucoma in adults. High eye pressure can lead to damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision if not treated.
HOW DOES AZOPT WORK?
Your eye produces a clear, watery liquid that nourishes the inside of the eye. Normally, this liquid drains out of the eye, but if it doesn’t drain properly, pressure can build up inside the eye. AZOPT® contains brinzolamide, which helps reduce the production of this liquid, thereby lowering the pressure in your eye.
WHO SHOULD NOT USE AZOPT?
Do not use if you:
- Are allergic to brinzolamide or any other ingredient in the medication.
- Are allergic to sulfonamide medications (used to treat infections and diabetes).
- Have severe kidney problems.
- Have a condition called hyperchloremic acidosis (too much acid in your blood).
Before Using AZOPT, Inform Your Doctor If You:
- Have mild to moderate kidney problems.
- Have liver problems.
- Have dry eyes or issues with your cornea.
- Have a type of glaucoma called acute angle-closure glaucoma.
- Are taking other carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.
- Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Warnings:
- AZOPT® is not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age.
- If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying AZOPT® and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in. AZOPT® contains benzalkonium chloride, which can stain soft contact lenses.
- Do not drive or use machinery until your vision is clear, as AZOPT® may cause blurred vision temporarily.
HOW TO USE AZOPT - Always use AZOPT exactly as prescribed by your doctor
- Shake the bottle well before each use.
- Wash your hands before use.
- Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Hold the bottle upside down and squeeze to release a drop into the pocket.
- Close your eye and press your finger to the corner of your eye by the nose for 2 minutes to prevent the medication from draining into your nose and throat.
- If using in both eyes, repeat these steps for the other eye.
- Close the bottle cap tightly after use.
