NEUPRO PATCH - Canada product information
What is Neupro?
Neupro is a transdermal patch that delivers medication through your skin over 24 hours. The active ingredient, rotigotine, helps manage symptoms of:
- Parkinson’s Disease: Neupro can be used in both early and advanced stages of Parkinson's, either alone or in combination with other medications.
- Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS): This is a condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move your legs, especially when at rest. Neupro helps reduce these symptoms in adults.
How Does Neupro Work?
Neupro works by mimicking the effects of dopamine, a naturally occurring chemical in the brain that is important for controlling movement. By increasing dopamine activity, Neupro helps reduce symptoms like stiffness, tremors, and difficulty moving in Parkinson's disease, and alleviates the urge to move your legs in Restless Legs Syndrome.
How to Use Neupro
-
Apply One Patch Daily:
- Apply the patch to clean, dry, and healthy skin on your stomach, thigh, hip, shoulder, or upper arm. Avoid areas with cuts, irritation, or sunburn.
-
Change Patch Location Every Day:
- To avoid skin irritation, rotate the application site every day. You should not apply the patch to the same area for at least 14 days.
-
When to Apply:
- Apply the patch at around the same time each day. Leave it on for 24 hours, then replace it with a new one.
-
If the Patch Falls Off:
- If the patch becomes loose or falls off, simply apply a new one and wear it for the rest of the 24-hour period.
Important Safety Information
Drowsiness and Sudden Sleep
- Some people may experience drowsiness or even sudden episodes of falling asleep during everyday activities, including driving. If you feel excessively sleepy or have experienced sudden sleep episodes, do not drive or operate heavy machinery. Speak with your doctor immediately if this happens.
Heat and the Patch
- Do not expose the patch to heat, such as heating pads, saunas, hot baths, or direct sunlight. Heat can cause the patch to release too much medication into your body.
MRI and Cardioversion
- The patch contains aluminum, which can cause burns during MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or cardioversion procedures. Always remove the patch before undergoing these treatments.
Skin Irritation
- You may experience mild to moderate skin irritation where the patch is applied. If the irritation lasts for more than a few days, worsens, or spreads, contact your doctor. Do not expose irritated skin to sunlight, as this can cause permanent changes in skin color.
Possible Side Effects
Neupro may cause side effects, some of which are common while others are less frequent. Common side effects include:
- Skin reactions where the patch is applied, such as redness, itching, or swelling
- Nausea or vomiting, especially when first starting the medication
- Drowsiness or dizziness
- Headaches
- Increased blood pressure
In some cases, people using Neupro may experience:
- Sudden onset of sleep during activities like driving
- Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there)
- Unusual urges, such as compulsive gambling or excessive spending

If you experience severe side effects or anything unusual, contact your doctor immediately.
Who Should Not Use Neupro?
You should not use Neupro if:
- You are allergic to rotigotine or any other ingredients in the patch.
- You have had an allergic reaction to sulfites, as Neupro contains sodium metabisulfite, which can cause severe allergic reactions in sensitive people, especially those with asthma.
Neupro is also not recommended for:
- Children under 18 years of age, as safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been established.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, talk to your doctor before starting Neupro.
Storage Instructions
- Store Neupro patches at 59°F to 86°F (15°C to 30°C).
- Keep each patch in its original pouch until you are ready to use it. Once you remove the patch from the pouch, apply it right away.
- Disposal: After removing a used patch, fold it in half with the sticky sides together and dispose of it safely out of reach of children and pets. The patch still contains some medication even after use, so it’s important to handle it carefully.
What to Do in Case of Missed Dose or Overdose
