What is XERESE?

XERESE is a prescription cream used to treat cold sores (herpes labialis) on the lips and around the mouth. It is for adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. XERESE helps prevent cold sores from worsening into open sores.

How Does It Work?

Acyclovir helps stop the herpes virus from multiplying.
Hydrocortisone reduces swelling, redness, and discomfort.
Together, they help reduce the severity and duration of a cold sore.

Who Should Not Use XERESE

Do not use XERESE if:

  • You are allergic to acyclovir, hydrocortisone, or any ingredients in the cream

  • You have untreated skin infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal)

  • You are under 12 years old

  • You have a weakened immune system (for example, due to HIV, cancer, or organ transplant)

Before Using XERESE, Tell Your Doctor If You:

  • Have any medical conditions

  • Take other medications

  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant

  • Are breastfeeding (hydrocortisone can pass into breast milk)

  • Are an athlete (hydrocortisone is on some banned-substance lists)

How to Use XERESE

  • Use at the first sign of a cold sore (tingling, itching, burning, or redness)

  • Apply a thin layer to the affected area five times a day for five days

  • Wash your hands before and after applying

  • Do not rub or touch the sore to avoid spreading the virus

  • Do not apply inside your mouth, eyes, nose, or genitals

  • Wait 30 minutes after applying before bathing or swimming

  • Do not cover the sore with a bandage or apply other products (like makeup or sunscreen) on the area

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not use extra cream to make up for a missed dose.

  • Burning, tingling, or irritation
