What this medication is for

Xifaxan is an antibiotic that works inside your gut. It is used to reduce the risk of hepatic encephalopathy (confusion caused by liver disease) and to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) in adults. It is not used for infections outside the intestines.

How this medication works

Xifaxan stays mostly in the intestines and is very minimally absorbed into the bloodstream. It reduces certain gut bacteria and toxins that can cause symptoms.

Take exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

Hepatic encephalopathy: 550 mg twice daily

IBS-D: 550 mg three times daily for 14 days

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.

Common side effects may include nausea, bloating, stomach pain, headache, and dizziness.

Serious but rare side effects include severe diarrhea (possible C. difficile infection) and allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or trouble breathing. Seek medical help right away if these occur.
