What is Canasa ?
Canasa suppositories contain the active ingredient mesalamine (also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid or 5-ASA), which helps reduce inflammation in the rectum and lower part of the large bowel.
What is it used for?
Canasa is used to manage ulcerative proctitis, an inflamed rectum, and as an additional treatment for more extensive distal ulcerative colitis, which affects the lining of the large bowel and rectum.
Who should not use Canasa?
Do not use Canasa if:
- You have severe kidney or liver problems.
- You are allergic to mesalamine or any other ingredients in Canasa.
- You are allergic to salicylates (e.g., aspirin).
- You have stomach or small intestinal ulcers.
- You have urinary tract obstructions.
- The patient is an infant under two years old.
Before Using Canasa
Talk to your doctor if you have:
- Liver disease.
- Mild to moderate liver function impairment.
- Allergies to mesalamine, sulfasalazine, or salicylates.
- Kidney disease.
- Bleeding or clotting disorders.
- Higher than normal blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels.

How to Use Canasa
- Dosage: For 500 mg suppositories, use one suppository twice or three times a day. For 1000 mg suppositories, use one suppository once daily at bedtime. The usual adult dose is 1.0 - 1.5 grams per day. Do not abruptly stop using Canasa.
- Insertion: Insert the suppository into the rectum with gentle pressure, pointed end first. Use a small amount of lubricating gel if necessary.
- Retention: Try to retain the suppository for 1 to 3 hours or longer.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for the next dose. Do not use two suppositories at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Rash, fever, dizziness (especially if allergic to sulfasalazine).
- Worsening of ulcerative colitis (severe abdominal pain, diarrhea).
