CREON Mini-Microspheres are tiny granules containing enzymes that help you digest food. These enzymes are extracted from pig pancreas glands. They help break down fats, proteins, and sugars in your food, making it easier for your body to absorb nutrients.

WHY DO YOU NEED CREON?

Your doctor has prescribed CREON because your pancreas isn't working properly. This condition is called pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI). It can be caused by:

  • Cystic fibrosis (a genetic disorder)
  • Chronic pancreatitis (long-term inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Pancreatic surgery
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Other conditions affecting the pancreas

Symptoms of PEI include fatty stools, weight loss, and stomach pain.

HOW TO TAKE CREON

  • When to take: Always take CREON during or immediately after a meal or snack. This helps the enzymes mix with your food.
  • How to take: Swallow the capsules whole with a drink. Do not crush or chew the capsules. If you have trouble swallowing them, you can open the capsules and sprinkle the granules onto a small amount of soft, acidic food like applesauce or yogurt. Swallow the mixture immediately without chewing.

DOSAGE

Your doctor will tell you how much CREON to take based on your weight, diet, and condition.
  • Infants: 2,000 to 5,000 units of lipase per feeding.
  • Children under 4 years: 1,000 units of lipase per kilogram of body weight per meal.
  • Children 4 years and older, and adults: 500 units of lipase per kilogram of body weight per meal.

Always follow your doctor’s instructions on the dosage. Do not change the dose without consulting your doctor.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

Like all medicines, CREON can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
  • Very common: Stomach pain
  • Common: Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Uncommon: Rash

If you experience severe itching, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the lips, stop taking CREON and seek medical help immediately.

IMPORTANT WARNINGS

  • Fibrosing colonopathy: This is a rare bowel condition that can occur with high doses of pancreatic enzymes. If you experience unusual stomach pain or any change in your symptoms, contact your doctor.
  • Allergic reactions: Do not take CREON if you are allergic to pork products or any other ingredient in the medication.

STORAGE

  • Store CREON at temperatures not exceeding 77°F.
