Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) is a medication that belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It is used to treat conditions involving excessive stomach acid, such as erosive esophagitis (EE) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).


WHAT IS DEXILANT USED FOR?

  • Healing of Erosive Esophagitis: For up to 8 weeks in patients aged 12 years and older.
  • Maintenance of Healed Erosive Esophagitis: For up to 4 months in adolescents (12 to 17 years) and up to 6 months in adults.
  • Treatment of Heartburn associated with GERD: For 4 weeks in patients aged 12 years and older.

  • DO NOT TAKE DEXILANT IF YOU:

  • Are allergic to dexlansoprazole or any other ingredients in Dexilant.
  • Are taking rilpivirine-containing medications.

  • HOW SHOULD I TAKE DEXILANT?


      Dosage: Follow your doctor's instructions. The typical doses are:

      • Healing of Erosive Esophagitis: 60 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks.
      • Maintenance of Healed Erosive Esophagitis: 30 mg once daily for up to 6 months in adults and 4 months in adolescents.
      • GERD: 30 mg once daily for 4 weeks.

      How to take it:

      • Swallow the capsule whole with plenty of water.
      • It can be taken with or without food.
      • If you have trouble swallowing, you can open the capsule and sprinkle the granules on a tablespoon of applesauce. Swallow immediately without chewing.


    MISSED DOSE

    If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.


    POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS


    Common side effects include:

    • Diarrhea
    • Abdominal pain
    • Nausea
    • Headache
    • Flatulence
    • Constipation

    If you experience severe side effects like severe skin reactions, signs of liver problems, or signs of low magnesium (e.g., muscle cramps, seizures), seek medical attention immediately.


    DRUG INTERACTIONS


    Some medications can interact with Dexilant, including:

    • Antiretrovirals like rilpivirine and atazanavir
    • Methotrexate
    • Warfarin
    • Clopidogrel

    Always inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.


    SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

    • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss with your doctor whether you should take Dexilant.
