Diovan contains the active ingredient valsartan. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. It can also be used to increase the chances of survival after a heart attack.

HOW DOES DIOVAN WORK?

Diovan belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It works by relaxing blood vessels, which helps to lower blood pressure and makes it easier for your heart to pump blood.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

• For High Blood Pressure: The typical starting dose is 80 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase this dose based on your response to the medication, up to a maximum of 320 mg daily.
• For Heart Failure: The starting dose is usually 40 mg twice daily. Your doctor may adjust this dose up to 160 mg twice daily, depending on how well you tolerate the medication.
• After a Heart Attack: Treatment can start as early as 12 hours after a heart attack with a dose of 20 mg twice daily, which may be gradually increased to a target dose of 160 mg twice daily.

Take Diovan at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water.

WHAT DO TO IF YOU MISS A DOSE?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
