Divigel® (Estradiol Gel) – Information
What Is Divigel?
Divigel is a prescription estrogen gel used to treat moderate to severe menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. It contains estradiol, a hormone that replaces estrogen your body no longer makes after menopause. Divigel is absorbed through the skin and delivers estrogen into your bloodstream.
What Is Divigel Used For?
Divigel is used to relieve menopausal symptoms, including:
-
Hot flashes
-
Night sweats
-
Sudden feelings of warmth or flushing
It is not approved to prevent heart disease, dementia, or osteoporosis unless specifically directed by your healthcare provider.
How to Use Divigel
Divigel is applied once daily to clean, dry skin on the upper thigh. The entire contents of one packet should be used each day. Allow the gel to dry completely before dressing, and wash your hands after application. Rotate thighs daily and avoid applying to the breasts, face, vagina, or irritated skin. Do not wash the area for at least one hour after application.
Important Safety Information
If you still have your uterus, your doctor will usually prescribe a progestin along with Divigel. This helps lower the risk of uterine (endometrial) cancer. Divigel should not be used if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of estrogen-dependent cancers, blood clots, stroke, or certain liver conditions.
Estrogen therapy may increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and some cancers, especially with long-term use. For this reason, Divigel should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
-
Breast tenderness or swelling
-
Headache
-
Nausea or bloating
-
Spotting or vaginal bleeding
-
Skin irritation at the application site
Seek medical help right away if you experience chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, severe headache, vision changes, or leg pain or swelling.
Monitoring and Follow-Up
Regular checkups are important while using Divigel. Your healthcare provider may recommend breast exams, mammograms, pelvic exams, and blood pressure monitoring. Report any unusual vaginal bleeding promptly.
Storage
Store Divigel at room temperature and keep it out of reach of children. Because the gel contains alcohol, avoid flames or smoking until it has fully dried.
