What is EpiPen®?

EpiPen® is a medical device that provides an emergency dose of a medication called epinephrine. It is used to treat severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).

EpiPen® comes in two forms:

  • EpiPen®: Contains 0.3 mg of epinephrine, for adults and children weighing 30 kg or more.
  • EpiPen Jr®: Contains 0.15 mg of epinephrine, for children weighing between 15 kg and 30 kg.

When to Use EpiPen®?

EpiPen® should be used immediately when experiencing a severe allergic reaction. Symptoms include:

  • Swelling of the throat, lips, tongue, or eyes
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Wheezing and cough
  • Hives or itching
  • Stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Sudden feeling of weakness, fainting, or a sense of doom

Common triggers of severe allergic reactions include certain foods (like peanuts or shellfish), insect stings, medications, and latex.


How Does EpiPen® Work?

EpiPen® contains epinephrine, which helps to:

  • Open up airways to make breathing easier
  • Increase blood pressure to prevent fainting
  • Reduce swelling and hives

How to Use EpiPen®?

  1. Prepare:
    • Remove the EpiPen® from its carrier tube.
    • Hold the EpiPen® in your hand with the orange tip pointing downward. Do not place your fingers over the orange tip.
    • Remove the blue safety cap by pulling it straight up. Do not twist or bend the cap.
  2. Administer:
    • Place the orange tip against the middle of the outer thigh, at a right angle to the thigh.
    • Swing and push the auto-injector firmly until it clicks. Hold it in place for 3 seconds to deliver the medication.
    • Remove the EpiPen® and massage the injection site for 10 seconds.
  3. After Use:
    • Seek immediate medical attention, even if symptoms appear to be improving.
    • Give the used EpiPen® to emergency responders or hospital staff.

Important Safety Information

  • Do not inject: Into a vein, buttocks, hands, feet, or other body parts.
  • Hold firmly: If administering to a young child, hold their leg firmly to prevent movement during the injection.
  • Seek Help: Always call 911 or go to the emergency room after using EpiPen®.
  • Carry two: It is recommended to carry two EpiPen® devices in case a second dose is needed.

Storage Instructions

  • Store at room temperature (77°F). Do not refrigerate or expose to extreme temperatures.
  • Keep EpiPen® in its carrier tube to protect from damage. The carrier tube is not waterproof.
  • Regularly check the solution in the viewing window; it should be clear and colorless. Replace if discolored or contains particles.

When to Contact a Healthcare Provider

  • If you or your child experience any side effects such as paleness, dizziness, weakness, shaking, headache, or irregular heartbeats.
  • If there are signs of infection at the injection site, such as redness, warmth, swelling, or tenderness.
  • For a replacement EpiPen® after use or if it has expired.
