What is Fragmin?

Fragmin is a medication that helps prevent blood clots. It contains dalteparin sodium and is given as an injection under the skin or into a vein.


What is Fragmin used for?


Fragmin is used for:
  • Preventing blood clots during and after surgery.
  • Treating blood clots in veins (deep vein thrombosis).
  • Managing unstable heart conditions like angina and certain types of heart attacks.

  • Treating and preventing blood clots in cancer patients.

Who should not use Fragmin?


Do not use Fragmin if you:
  • Are allergic to dalteparin sodium or any ingredients in the medication.
  • Have a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (low platelet count).
  • Have uncontrolled bleeding.
  • Have severe high blood pressure, certain eye problems, or severe liver disease.
  • Are undergoing spinal or epidural anesthesia and need high doses of Fragmin.

Important Warnings

  • Benzyl Alcohol Warning: Some Fragmin vials contain benzyl alcohol, which can be harmful to newborns and pregnant women.
  • Bleeding Risk: Fragmin can increase the risk of bleeding. Monitor for signs like unusual bruising or bleeding.
  • Spinal/Epidural Hematomas: Patients receiving spinal or epidural anesthesia are at risk of severe bleeding complications.

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis: 200 IU/kg once daily.
  • Unstable Heart Conditions: 120 IU/kg twice daily, with a maximum of 10,000 IU every 12 hours.
  • Cancer Patients: 200 IU/kg once daily for the first month, then 150 IU/kg for the following months.

  • Possible Side Effects

  • Common: Bruising at the injection site, mild bleeding.
  • Serious: Major bleeding, allergic reactions, low platelet count.
  • Less Common: Elevated liver enzymes, skin rash, hair loss.
