Generic Semaglutide Injection (Semaglutide)
How Generic Semaglutide Works
Semaglutide helps your body regulate blood sugar in several ways:
- Increases insulin release when blood sugar levels are elevated
- Reduces the amount of sugar released by the liver
- Slows stomach emptying, helping you feel full longer
- Helps reduce appetite in many patients
Because it works in a glucose-dependent manner, the risk of low blood sugar is generally low when used on its own. The risk may increase when used alongside insulin or certain diabetes medications such as sulfonylureas.
Available Pen Strengths
Generic semaglutide is supplied in convenient multi-dose pre-filled pens:
- 2 mg pen delivering 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg doses
- 4 mg pen delivering 1 mg doses
The medication is administered once weekly by subcutaneous injection into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.
Typical Dosing
Treatment is usually started at a low dose to help minimize stomach-related side effects:
- Weeks 1–4: 0.25 mg once weekly
- Weeks 5–8: 0.5 mg once weekly
- If additional blood sugar control is needed, the dose may be increased to 1 mg once weekly and, if appropriate, up to 2 mg weekly under medical supervision.
Common Side Effects
The most commonly reported side effects include:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Stomach discomfort
- Indigestion
- Decreased appetite
These side effects are usually mild to moderate and are most common when starting treatment or increasing the dose. They often improve as your body adjusts to the medication.
