What is IOPIDINE®?

IOPIDINE® is an eye drop solution used to manage eye pressure. It is available in two strengths: 0.5% and 1% apraclonidine hydrochloride.


What is it used for?

  • IOPIDINE® 1%: Used to control or prevent a rise in eye pressure following certain types of laser eye surgeries.
  • IOPIDINE® 0.5%: Used alongside other medications to lower high pressure in the eyes, which can lead to glaucoma if untreated.

How does it work?

IOPIDINE® works by reducing the amount of fluid produced in the eye and increasing the flow of fluid out of the eye, thus lowering eye pressure.


Before using IOPIDINE®

Tell your doctor if you:
  • Have heart problems or blood circulation issues.
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
  • Have liver or kidney problems.
  • Have a history of depression.

Do not use IOPIDINE® if you:

  • Are allergic to apraclonidine, clonidine, or any other ingredients in the product.
  • Are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
  • Are under 18 years of age.

  • How to use IOPIDINE®

  • IOPIDINE® 1%: Applied by a healthcare professional before and after eye surgery.
  • IOPIDINE® 0.5%: Typically, 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) 2 or 3 times a day. Ensure an interval of at least 5 minutes between different eye drops.

  • Steps to apply IOPIDINE® 0.5%:
    1. Wash your hands.
    2. Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid.
    3. Hold the bottle upside down and release one drop into the pocket created between the eyelid and eye.
    4. Close the bottle cap immediately after use.

    Possible side effects


    Common side effects:

    • Redness, itching, or discomfort in the eyes.
    • Dry mouth, headache, tiredness.

    Serious side effects:

    • Severe allergic reactions like swelling, increased tearing, and redness. Stop using the medication and seek immediate medical help.
