Levemir® is a long-acting insulin used to control blood sugar in people with diabetes. It helps your body regulate blood sugar levels for up to 24 hours.


Who Can Use Levemir®?

  • Adults and children (2 years and older) with type 1 diabetes.
  • Adults with type 2 diabetes when insulin is needed to control high blood sugar.

  • How to Use Levemir® Penfill® Cartridges


    Dosage:

    • Your doctor will determine the right dose for you.
    • Levemir® can be used once or twice daily. If using twice daily, the evening dose can be taken with dinner or at bedtime.

    Injection Sites:

    • Inject under the skin (subcutaneously) in the stomach area, thigh, upper arm, or buttocks.
    • Rotate the injection site within the same region to reduce the risk of skin problems.

    Steps for Injection:

    1. Wash your hands.
    2. Attach a new needle to your insulin pen.
    3. Prime the pen as instructed by your healthcare provider.
    4. Dial the correct dose.
    5. Inject the insulin into your chosen site.
    6. Dispose of the needle safely after use.

    Storage:

  • Store unused Levemir® cartridges in the refrigerator.
  • Once in use, you can keep the cartridge at room temperature (below 86°F) for up to 42 days.
  • Do not freeze or expose to direct heat or light.

  • Supplied:

    Levemir® Penfill® Cartridges from Canada are supplied in packs of 1 x 3 mL or 5 x 3 mL, each containing 100 units/mL of insulin detemir solution.


    Possible Side Effects:

  • Common: Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), reactions at the injection site (redness, swelling).
  • Serious: Severe low blood sugar can cause unconsciousness or seizures. If this happens, seek medical help immediately.

  • What to Do in Case of Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar):

  • Symptoms include sweating, shakiness, dizziness, and confusion.
  • Treat by consuming fast-acting sugar like glucose tablets, fruit juice, or regular soda.
  • Always carry a source of sugar with you.

  • Important Warnings:

  • Do not use Levemir® if it looks cloudy, thickened, or has particles.
  • Never share your insulin pen or cartridges with others, even if the needle is changed.
  • Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels as directed by your doctor.

  • When to Contact Your Doctor:

  • If you experience frequent low blood sugar.
  • If you have an illness or infection.
  • If you notice any unusual skin reactions at the injection site.

  • Special Considerations:

  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Certain medications can affect how Levemir® works. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you are taking.

  • Emergency Contact:

    For any suspected overdose or severe reaction, contact your local emergency services or poison control center immediately.
