Saxenda® (liraglutide) is a medicine used to help adults and some children manage their weight. It contains the active ingredient liraglutide, which is similar to a hormone that occurs naturally in your body and helps control your appetite.
WHO CAN USE SAXENDA®?
Adults:
With a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (obese).
With a BMI of 27 or higher (overweight) and have at least one weight-related health problem (like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol).
Children (aged 12-17):
Weighing more than 132 lbs and have a BMI of 30 or higher (obese).
HOW DOES SAXENDA® WORK?
Saxenda® helps control your appetite, which can lead to eating less and losing weight. It should be used along with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
HOW TO USE SAXENDA®
- Saxenda® is given as an injection once daily, at any time of the day, with or without food.
- The injection is usually given under the skin in the stomach area, thigh, or upper arm.
- You should follow the dose escalation schedule provided by your doctor to minimize side effects like nausea.
Dose Escalation Schedule:
- Week 1: 0.6 mg daily
- Week 2: 1.2 mg daily
- Week 3: 1.8 mg daily
- Week 4: 2.4 mg daily
- Week 5 and onwards: 3.0 mg daily (maintenance dose)
MISSED DOSE
If you miss a dose and remember within 12 hours, take it as soon as you remember. If it is more than 12 hours, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose or increase the dose to make up for the missed dose.

WHEN NOT TO USE SAXENDA®
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking, as Saxenda® can interact with certain medications.
Do not use Saxenda® if you are also taking another GLP-1 receptor agonist or insulin.
Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels if you have type 2 diabetes.
STORAGE
SUPPLIED
Saxenda from Canada is packaged as a box of five saxenda 3 mL pens. Saxenda pens have a concentration of 6mg/mL of liraglutide, administering doses in 0.6 mg, 1.2 mg, 1.8 mg, 2.4 mg, or 3.0 mg. Each Saxenda® pen is for use by a single patient only, do not share the pen.
Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions when using Saxenda® and inform them of any side effects or concerns you may have. This medication should be used as part of a comprehensive weight management plan that includes diet and exercise.
