What is Stribild?
Stribild is a medication used to treat HIV-1 in adults. It contains four active ingredients: elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.
What is HIV-1?
HIV-1 is a type of virus that attacks the immune system, which is the body’s defense against infections. If left untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).
How does Stribild work?
Stribild works by preventing the HIV virus from multiplying in your body, which helps reduce the amount of virus and boosts your immune system.
Who should take Stribild?
Stribild is for adults 18 years and older who have not been treated for HIV-1 before. It is not for people who have HIV-1 strains resistant to any of the components in Stribild.
Who should NOT take Stribild?
- People allergic to elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, or any other ingredients in Stribild.
- People taking certain medications that can interact with Stribild (check with your doctor).
Important Safety Information:
- Lactic Acidosis: Rare but serious buildup of lactic acid in the blood can occur. Symptoms include muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and feeling cold.
- Liver Problems: Severe liver issues, including liver enlargement and fatty liver, have been reported. Symptoms include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, light-colored stools, nausea, and stomach pain.
- Kidney Problems: Stribild can cause kidney damage. Your doctor will check your kidney function before and during treatment.
- Bone Problems: Stribild may cause bone thinning. Talk to your doctor if you have a history of bone problems.
How to take Stribild:
- Take one tablet once a day with food.
- Do not skip doses. If you miss a dose and it is not almost time for your next dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.
Possible Side Effects:
- Common: Diarrhea, nausea, headache, fatigue, and abnormal dreams.
- Serious: New or worsening kidney problems, liver problems, and lactic acidosis.
Drug Interactions:
Some medications can interact with Stribild, affecting how Stribild works or increasing side effects. Inform your doctor about all medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
- If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor. The safety of Stribild during pregnancy is not known.
- Do not breastfeed if you are taking Stribild to avoid passing HIV to your baby through breast milk.
Monitoring:
Regular blood tests are needed to check your liver and kidney function, as well as your bone health.
