VICTOZA - Canada Product Information

What is Victoza and what is it used for?

Victoza is a medicine that helps manage blood sugar levels in adults and children aged 10 and older who have type 2 diabetes. It is used along with diet and exercise and may be combined with other diabetes medicines if needed. Victoza is not insulin, and it is not for people with type 1 diabetes.

How does Victoza work?

Victoza works by helping your body release more insulin when your blood sugar is high, and it helps reduce the amount of sugar your liver makes. This helps lower your blood sugar levels.

How do I use Victoza?

  • Victoza is given as an injection under the skin, usually in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.
  • Start with a low dose of 0.6 mg once a day for at least one week to help your body get used to the medicine.
  • After that, your doctor may increase the dose to 1.2 mg daily and, if needed, to 1.8 mg daily.
  • You can take Victoza at any time of the day, with or without food.
  • If you miss a dose, do not take extra to make up for it. Just take your next dose as usual.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Victoza can cause side effects, but not everyone gets them. Common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood sugar (especially if used with other diabetes medicines)
  • Injection site reactions

Serious side effects include:

  • Signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Pancreatitis, which can cause severe stomach pain that might reach your back and may be accompanied by vomiting.
  • Symptoms of thyroid tumors, like a lump in your neck, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing.

If you experience any serious side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Who should not use Victoza?

Do not use Victoza if:

  • You or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of thyroid cancer) or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2.
  • You are allergic to liraglutide or any of the other ingredients in Victoza.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Special precautions

  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of pancreatitis, kidney problems, or any other health conditions.
  • Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids, especially if you experience vomiting or diarrhea.

How should I store Victoza?

  • Store unused Victoza pens in the refrigerator.
  • Once opened, Victoza pens can be kept at room temperature for up to 30 days.

If you have any questions or need more information about using Victoza, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific health needs.
